At What Age is a Dog or Cat Considered a Senior

The age at which a Dog and Cat are considered a senior is not universal. Senior status for our canine Friends can vary depending on several factors such as breed, size, and overall health. In general, smaller dog breeds tend to have longer lifespans than larger breeds, so they may be considered seniors at a later age. Similarly, cats generally live longer than dogs.

As a general Rule according to Julie Buzby, DVM, CAVCA:

  • Large-breed dogs are considered seniors after age six or seven
  • Medium-breed dogs are generally considered seniors after age seven to nine
  • Small dogs aren’t considered seniors until after age ten or eleven

Now, as for our feline Friends they are generally considered mature or middle-aged between 7-10 years old. Typically, cats are considered seniors around 11-14 years old or older. Keep in mind that these are approximate age ranges. Individual animals may age differently based on their genetics, lifestyle, and overall health.

Remember regular check-ups can help you determine the best course of care for your senior pet. You want to give them the best journey in their Golden years to thrive and live enriched lives just as you’ve done throughout every season of their Life.
